Submitted by admin on Wed, 2005-11-02 12:00.

ebbie Roffman, author of "Sex and Sensibility: The Thinking Parents' Guide to Talking Sense About Sex," will speak on Tuesday, Nov. 15 from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Inly School, 46 Watch Hill Drive, Scituate. Suitable for parents with children of all ages, the presentation is free and open to the public.

A nationally certified sexuality and family life educator and counselor, Roffman will discuss the importance of comprehensive, developmentally appropriate sex education, and offer specific advice on what to tell children and when. She will address topical issues such as Instant Messaging, sex on the Internet, and provocative dancing in music videos and at dances.

Roffman has been teaching parents, teachers, and students for 30 years. The former associate education editor of the Journal of Sex Education and Therapy, she has written dozens of articles and commentaries for health and education journals and major newspapers. Her work in the classroom and with parents has been featured in the New York Times, Baltimore Sun, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, Education Week, Teacher Magazine, USA Today, Parents Magazine, an HBO television special on parenting, and on NPR radio. She has appeared on Nightline with Ted Koppel and The Early Show with Bryant Gumbel and ABC's 20/20 with John Stossel. Roffman believes sex education is imperative, given the impact of living in a popular culture in which "sex has been essentially de-meaned," as she calls it, and "literally stripped of meaning."
