The down-to-earth actress, who made her name – and scooped an Emmy – as harassed homemaker Lynette in the hit series and has two daughters in real life, now finds herself having to lay on the glam on a regular basis in order to attend all those glitzy events.

And she's responded with a parade of different looks, ringing the changes from floaty to sleek to colourful – apparently just as willing to experiment under the spotlight as she is on the screen. One personal trend she shows no sign of relinquishing, though, is her penchant for long earrings.

Alongside the big break in Desperate Housewives came the chance to take the lead in Transamerica, in which Felicity plays a man preparing for a sex change. There's now talk of an Oscar for the 43-year-old who spent years accepting bit parts and wondering if her Hollywood career would ever take off.

With the race now on among the top fashion houses to clothe the most beautiful, bankable and talented stars in the Tinseltown firmament on the big night, it will be interesting to see which seduces this versatile 'newcomer' into one of their creations.
