There are several years between brothers Carson Palmer, quarterback of the Cincinnati Bengals, and Jordan Palmer, quarterback for the Univ. of Texas-El Paso. Despite the age difference, Snyder sees a lot of similarities.
“I never had the chance to play against Carson, but I did have the opportunity to go to the Bengals camp this past year and watch him throw and watch his mechanics and it's funny to watch his little brother on film because they have a lot of the same mechanics."
Snyder and the Herd will have a chance to play against Jordan Palmer Saturday in a Conference USA game set to kick off at 9 p.m. in the Sun Bowl.
While Carson Palmer has the Bengals off to a 5-1 start, Jordan Palmer and the Miners are 4-1 including 2-1 in C-USA. Marshall comes into the game 3-3 and 2-1.
The Miners' program has been resurrected under coach Mike Price. Before getting a second chance at UTEP, Price was fired at Alabama before ever coaching a game because of a scandal.
He acknowledged being heavily intoxicated, but denied allegations of sex at his hotel that the magazine reported. Alabama fired Price a few days before the article was published.
“I felt like going in to the last game that UAB was just as talented as UTEP and I still think that holds true, but after playing the game and having some of the special teams success that we had against UAB, UTEP is not going to allow that to happen."
But it may be the running game that concerns Snyder the most. The Miners rushed for 149 yards in a 45-21 win over Tulane last week and they are 8-1 under Price when rushing for more than 100 yards.
“They've got good running backs. That's the mark of a good team. When you can throw different styles of running backs at teams, it definitely helps. That was one thing I think Virginia Tech has going for them right now. They have three different kinds of tailbacks they can throw at you and they're all different in their own way," Snyder said.
Marshall has struggled with its offense and Snyder knows the Herd will need more offense if it wants to upset UTEP, the preseason favorite to win the C-USA western division.
“(UTEP) is very multiple. They do a good job disguising, which is always hard on a young quarterback. They're going to try and make you beat them left-handed and they've got the guy in the middle who when you try to beat them left-handed, he's pretty darn good," Snyder said referring to UTEP's Thomas Howard.
